About Wilhelm Schmidt
Wilhelm Schmidt was born in 1949 in Windhoek, Namibia. During his last years in high school, his family moved to Pretoria, South Africa. After school, he studied a variety of subjects e.g. History of Art, Psychology and Engineering at the University of Pretoria and the University of South Africa, obtaining two degrees in the process.
He started sculpting in 1971 and worked in plaster, wood, steel, bronze, fibreglass and stone.
In 1975 he became a full-time sculptor to date, and has produced more than 500 pieces of sculpture.
He has held many one-man, two-man and group exhibitions over the past 47 years.
His achievements in art include winning first prize for sculpture at the New Signatures Competition at the Pretoria Arts Association. The highlights of his career were in 2011 and 2016 when his sculptures were selected for the 12th and 17th China Changchun International Sculpture Symposiums.
